The Most and Fairly: 最 and 比较
最 for the top of the scale (最好, 最喜欢), and 比较 for a mild "fairly, rather" -- the softer cousin of 很.

The idea: one word before the adjective
The idea: Chinese has no -est or -er endings. One word in front of the adjective or liking verb does the job -- the same slot where 很 goes. 最 lifts it to the top of a group (and the group is set up first: 我们班他最高); 比较 softens it to 'fairly'.
