Hello and goodbye, thank you and you're welcome, sorry and never mind -- the phrases you'll use every day.

Hello: who + 好

The idea: Chinese greetings are built, not memorised one by one. A greeting is "who you're greeting, or what time it is" + 好 (hǎo) (good): 你好 (nǐ hǎo) is literally "you good." Swap the first part and you have a new greeting.

你好
nǐ hǎo -- hello -- "you good"
大家好
dàjiā hǎo -- hello, everyone
